A Christmas fantasy movie? Yes, it’s a reality! For a family-friendly flick featuring St. Nick and dragons, read on!
The Discovery
We all have traditional Christmas films we watch every year, like The Grinch or It’s a Wonderful Life, and many of them have a hint of magic that makes them feel just a little more special. But a full-blown Christmas fantasy film with elves and swords and dragons? This was missing from my repertoire until a trip to Comic-Con solved the problem.
I wandered through the maze of exhibitors selling their epic wares when the flash of a TV screen caught my eye. I stopped in my tracks and went back. “Did that say ‘save Christmas’? With a dragon?” Yes, sure enough!
Arrowstorm Entertainment, a Utah-based sci-fi and fantasy film company, released their feature film, The Christmas Dragon, in 2014. So what is this story about?
The Christmas Dragon Movie
In a medieval fantasy version of Europe, a dying elf bearing the Christmas crystal—the last hope to awaken the magic of Father Christmas—entrusts the magical artifact to the only one of pure heart he can find: a young orphan girl named Ayden. Together with a group of friends from her orphanage, Ayden sets out on a desperate mission to keep the hope of Christmas alive.
Dodging goblins, bandits, and other perils, the children team up with the wayward son of Father Christmas and an elf to fight through the magical forest and reach the north—only to find that a dragon they met on the way might be the key to saving Christmas.
Review
So now, the pros and cons.
Pros
Very kid friendly movie, suitable for all ages. The film is well done with good effects and costumes. It’s a good change of pace from the typical Christmas romance flicks or Santa shows.
Cons
The script is less than stellar in places. As an adult first-time viewer, I found some of the kids’ arguments and conversations with each other a little tedious since they have a lower maturity level, but these areas go by pretty quickly. The film uses a lot of classic fantasy components, which makes the plot rather predictable. However, the overall story is enjoyable.
