I hope this joke gives you a giggle. In seriousness, though, a lot of people are trying to silence others right now–and not by giving them something nice, but by using intimidation or abuse, or stealing their speaking platform. One of the great virtues of the United States is our commitment to freedom of speech, which has come under great attack. Please remember that as you wish to be heard, others also have a right to speak their opinion–even if it doesn’t align with yours. Instead of shouting to silence each other, let’s fill our mouths with sweetness that seasons our words to each other so that we can have constructive discussions, not shouting wars that don’t improve anyone’s view.
Silencing the truth doesn’t make it any less true, and shouting a lie doesn’t make it any less deceptive. There is a huge movement to suppress what is true in favor of a “preferred” narrative. But truth is worth holding onto, and that is why we must also hold tight to our right–and responsibility–to speak it.
I confess that I often make silence a refuge. Rather than engaging in a conflict, I’d rather sit on the sidelines and say nothing until the issue blows over. So here’s my first small step to finding the courage to speak up. This is me saying: don’t participate in silencing others. Remember the value of free speech and uphold it–even if it means extending that same freedom to those who disagree.
Do you feel like you’re being silenced in some way? What do you want to say?
